Need to Know Before You Go
Since this is a multi-day trip, we encourage you to first determine where you are going to stay. You have your options of camping or staying nearby in Ashford—or a bit of both. Our property, Copper Creek Inn, is just 2 miles from the entrance to Mount Rainier and provides a relaxing stay before you head in or head out! But if you plan to complete the trail, you’ll need to plan for overnight camping.
But, we won’t leave you hanging when it comes to hiking Mount Rainier’s Wonderland Trail. Here are some backpacking tips to make the most of your time and get an idea of what you’re getting into.
Best Time to Visit the Wonderland Trail
The best time to visit The Wonderland Trail is typically when the snow is melted but the weather isn’t too hot. However, the local wildflowers start to bloom in June and starting a bit early in the season can also be beneficial if you’re okay braving the crowds.
But, if you want to beat the heat, bugs, and crowds, consider going in the late summer to early fall—late July to mid-September.

Permits & Reservations
Like any national park, there are required permits, reservations, and fees associated with them. Here’s what you need to know and some helpful links to secure yours before you visit.
Permits
A wilderness permit is required if you are going to stay overnight in the backcountry of Mount Rainier. A wilderness permit allows the permit holder and their group to camp in a designated camp or area.
Permits must be obtained in person at a wilderness information center or visitor center. More information is available on
NPS’s Wilderness Permit webpage.
Reservations
Reservations are encouraged but not required. Advance reservations are available for peak season (June-September) on Recreation.gov. If you're planning on visiting Mount Rainier in the summer, you’ll need to plan ahead of time, as the first chance to apply for a reservation opportunity is in February.
If you’re one of the lucky ones and secure a permit, you will then have an opportunity to make a reservation in the early access period (March – April).
Check out the
NPS Fee & Pass page for updated cost and entrance requirements.
Packing Essentials
Now that you’ve secured your permit and made a reservation, let’s discuss what to pack. A successful backpacking trip is a prepared one!
The Big Four:
- Backpack (45–60L)
- Tent + sleeping bag & pad
- Hydration + food (8-14 days worth)
- Quality hiking shoes
Additional Essentials:
- Bear repellent
- Lightweight stove
- Sunscreen
- Extra socks
- Navigation materials: map, GPS, compass
- Water filter/purifier
- Layers for cold/rain (weather can turn quickly)
Food & Resupply
- Carry 2,500–4,000 calories/day
- Resupply points: Longmire, Mowich Lake, Sunrise
The best hiking foods are lightweight, high in energy, non-perishable, and easy to eat on the go.

Campsites & Itinerary Planning
If you’re planning on doing the entire trail, you’ll need to be prepared for camping overnight for 8-14 days. The trail has 18 designated campsites and you must camp at your assigned sites. Keep in mind, not all camps have group sites and parties with 6-12 people will need a camp that has a group site.
We recommend building a
Mount Rainier itinerary that balances your mileage with terrain. If you’re going with a group, consider everyone’s athletic abilities.
The Wonderland Trail is long and difficult, so you will need a moderate-high level of stamina to complete it. However, you can go as slow or as fast as you’d like and sometimes taking more breaks is a nice way to fully soak in the environment.
Training & Preparation
- Practice with a loaded backpack on local trails
- Get used to elevation gain/loss
- Do at least one overnight trip before the Wonderland Trail
- Always follow Leave No Trace principles
What Makes It Worth It?
While we can’t argue that the views are what make the Wonderland Trail worth trekking, we believe the true joy is in the journey! The multi-day trek around Mount Rainier provides jaw-dropping glacier views, peaceful solitude, and connection with nature.
The Wonderland Trail is a challenging journey and finishing it is something truly worth celebrating. Start planning early, training, and picture the sweet feeling of accomplishment!
